Isle of Skye Elopement on Super 8
Edward & Breanna on the Isle of Skye
Edward and Breanna eloped on the Isle of Skye, among green ridges, lochs and waterfalls, with the wind in the veil and sheep on the hillsides. A Scottish celebrant in a kilt led their vows in the open landscape, they shared a toast from a quaich – the traditional two-handled Scottish cup – and spent the rest of the day exploring the island. I filmed the day digitally and on Kodak Super 8, and the two weave together in the film.
About the Isle of Skye
The Isle of Skye is the largest island of the Inner Hebrides, linked to the Scottish mainland by the Skye Bridge – around two and a half hours’ drive from Inverness. The Cuillin mountains, the Quiraing, the Old Man of Storr and the Fairy Pools make it one of the most dramatic places to elope in Europe.
Scotland is wonderful for elopements: a ceremony led by a religious or belief celebrant can take place almost anywhere, outdoors included. The marriage notice has to reach the registrar at least 29 days before the wedding, so it is worth starting the paperwork early. Expect four seasons in a day – and some of the most beautiful light you will ever see.
Good to know
Accommodation on Skye books up early, especially in summer. Many roads are single-track with passing places, so allow extra time between locations, and in summer bring insect repellent for the midges – they are part of every Highland adventure.
