Caves of Hella Wedding

Janelle & Mike at the Caves of Hella

After a first look and an adventure along the South Coast, Janelle and Mike said their vows inside the Caves of Hella – man-made caves carved into the soft sandstone centuries ago – and celebrated the evening at Hótel Rangá.

About the Caves of Hella

The Caves of Hella lie on the Ægissíða farm near the village of Hella in South Iceland, about an hour and a half’s drive from Reykjavík. They were dug by hand into the soft sandstone, and some believe they are older than the Norse settlement of Iceland. They are only open with a guide.

With candles and lanterns the caves feel almost like a chapel – sheltered from the weather, quiet and very atmospheric. Nearby Hótel Rangá is a natural choice for the reception and a good base for northern lights in the darker months.

The caves combine well with the waterfalls and black beaches of the South Coast for photos before or after the ceremony. More about weddings in Iceland.
