Remote Elopement in Icelandic Highlands
Rose & Jacob’s Epic Vow Exchange in the Katla Mountains with a Range Rover Defender
Some weddings are about grandeur, others about intimacy—but Rose & Jacob’s Iceland elopement was all about adventure. With only their closest friends as witnesses, they embarked on a memorable journey through Iceland’s rugged wilderness, renting an old cabin on the south shore and an iconic white Range Rover Defender to take them deep into the highlands.
Their adventure led them to the remote Katla volcanic mountains, near Þakgil basecamp, where we navigated rough terrain and crossed multiple rivers to reach an untouched, hidden gem. Climbing through the beautiful mountains, they exchanged heartfelt vows in front of a secluded waterfall, surrounded by nothing but raw nature and the echoes of their love.
Unlike the bustling summer crowds, we found ourselves completely alone—just two souls, their best friends, and the vast Icelandic wilderness. A true off-the-grid love story, filled with authenticity, emotion, and dramatic scenery.
About Þakgil and the Katla mountains
Þakgil is a hidden canyon in the mountains north of Vík, reached by a gravel road that is usually open in summer. Green slopes, black ridges and the edge of Mýrdalsjökull make the area around it one of the most remote-feeling places you can reach in a day from the South Coast.
Getting deeper into the Katla mountains means rough tracks and river crossings, so a capable 4×4 and an experienced driver are essential. In return you get a ceremony with nobody else in sight.
