French Riviera Wedding Videographer

The French Riviera is where the Alps run down into the Mediterranean – red cliffs of the Esterel, perched villages, villas above the sea and a light that has drawn painters for more than a century. I am a destination wedding videographer based in Prague, and I film weddings on the Côte d’Azur and across Provence: documentary, unobtrusive and cinematic, with Super 8 film on request.

A wedding above the sea

One of the most unusual weddings I have ever filmed was Laura and Evan’s at Palais Bulles in Théoule-sur-Mer – the pink “bubble palace” designed by Antti Lovag and later owned by Pierre Cardin, high above the bay with the Esterel coast on one side and Cannes on the other. Their Jewish ceremony took place under a canopy of flowers in the open-air amphitheatre, with the sea behind them; then came dinner in a hall lit like a concert stage, a saxophone on the dance floor and a party in the round rooms until late at night.

The whole venue story is in my Palais Bulles wedding guide, and the film is here.

Where couples get married on the Riviera

The coast is short but every stretch has its own character:

  • Cannes and the Esterel – grand hotels on the Croisette, and to the west the red rocks and villas of Théoule-sur-Mer.
  • Antibes and Cap d’Antibes – an old town inside sea walls and some of the most famous hotels and villas on the coast.
  • Nice – the old town, the Promenade des Anglais and hilltop venues with views over the Baie des Anges.
  • Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat and Èze – the peninsula of gardens and villas, and the medieval village perched above the sea.
  • Monaco – technically its own country, a few minutes from Nice.
  • Saint-Tropez – further west in the Var, with beach clubs and vineyards inland.

When to marry on the Côte d’Azur

The Riviera is mild almost all year, but weddings mostly happen from May to early October. July and August are the hottest and busiest months, with the driest weather – plan the ceremony for the late afternoon, when the light softens and the heat drops. May, June and September are, in my view, the sweet spot: warm evenings, calmer roads and golden light over the water.

Getting legally married in France

A civil marriage in France can only take place at the town hall of a commune where one of you, or one of your parents, has lived continuously for at least a month before the banns are published – and the banns then hang for ten days. If neither of you lives in France, you cannot marry at a French town hall. That is why almost all destination couples on the Riviera marry legally at home and have a symbolic, religious or humanist ceremony at the venue, exactly as Laura and Evan did.

How I film a Riviera wedding

I work quietly, as part of the day rather than a production in the middle of it, and I always work hand in hand with your planner and photographer. On the Riviera that usually means a ceremony timed for the softer light over the sea, and enough time between dinner and the party to film the two of you on a terrace above the water at dusk. For couples who love film, I add a reel of Super 8 – see analogue wedding films. More about weddings in Provence and all my weddings in France.
