What Does an Elopement in Iceland Cost?

An elopement in Iceland can be as simple as the two of you, a celebrant and a rental car – or a helicopter, a glacier guide and a private dinner in a country hotel. Couples often ask me what to budget for, so here is every cost I see again and again, with the official fees and the published prices as of 2026. Prices change every season, so treat the numbers as a starting point and check the sources before you book.

The legal part and your celebrant

If you marry legally in Iceland, the official fees are small: ISK 6,700 for the certificate of no impediment, ISK 15,400 for a civil ceremony at the District Commissioner’s office, or ISK 10,000 for every started hour plus travel if the commissioner comes out to you. Most couples who elope in the landscape choose a humanist celebrant from Siðmennt: ISK 90,000 in 2026, plus ISK 201 per kilometre outside Reykjavík – a ceremony at Þingvellir comes to about ISK 109,000 with travel. Add ISK 3,200 for the marriage certificate and ISK 2,700 for an apostille. The full process is in getting legally married in Iceland.

Permits for national parks

This is the cost couples most often miss. Iceland’s national parks and protected areas need a permit for commercial photography and filming, and for events – and a wedding counts as an event.

  • Vatnajökull National Park (Jökulsárlón, Skaftafell, the ice caves): since March 2026 a permit costs ISK 62,400 for an event, ISK 83,200 for filming and photography and ISK 41,600 for private drone use; a late application within five working days costs an extra ISK 41,600. Apply at least 30 days ahead.
  • Other protected areas such as Snæfellsjökull National Park use the same fees through the Nature Conservation Agency, with up to 15 working days to process.
  • Þingvellir has its own rules: a single photographer or videographer carrying their own equipment does not need a filming permit; larger productions need notice of 7 or 30 days.

Ask your planner, photographer and videographer which permits they arrange and include – it is easy for a permit to fall between suppliers. Drones need permits in the parks too, and some places close to drones completely – Jökulsárlón from 15 April to 15 July, for the nesting birds.

Getting around

Most elopements need a car for at least two or three days, and in winter or for the Highlands it should be a 4×4 – F-roads are closed to ordinary cars, and rental companies price dynamically, so book early for summer. If you would rather not drive on your wedding day, planners arrange a private driver or a super-jeep with a guide, which is also the only way to reach some places in winter.

Glaciers, ice caves and helicopters

A ceremony on a glacier or in an ice cave always needs a licensed guide – for safety, and because operators work under agreements with the national park. Public ice cave tours start at around $198 per person with Icelandic Mountain Guides; a private tour for an elopement costs more and is quoted on request. Helicopter companies publish prices for scheduled tours – from ISK 46,900 per person with Norðurflug for a short flight over Reykjavík, up to around ISK 137,500 for a glacier landing – but a private charter for a wedding with a landing on a mountain or glacier is priced on request. Where you stay

Hotel prices change with the season, but a few hotels publish wedding packages. Hótel Rangá in the south, for example, offers elopement and wedding packages from €5,400, with an “Elope in Elegance” package including two nights in a junior suite from €10,900. Countryside hotels like Hótel Búðir, Hótel Rangá or ION are popular because you can get ready, have dinner and watch for the northern lights in one place. Your team

The biggest part of most budgets is the people: a planner, a photographer, a videographer, hair and make-up, flowers. An Icelandic planner such as Pink Iceland takes care of the permits, the celebrant, transport and the backup plan for the weather, which often saves more than it costs. For your film, send me your date and plans and I will put together a proposal for your day – every elopement is different, so I do not publish fixed packages.

How to keep the budget in check

  • Choose the season with care. Summer has the most light but also the highest demand; September and the shoulder months are quieter. Siðmennt doubles its fee on 17 June and on Christmas and New Year’s days. See the best time to elope in Iceland.
  • Stay in one region. Driving across the country on the wedding day costs time, fuel and celebrant travel – the south coast, Snæfellsnes or the Reykjanes peninsula each have enough for a whole day.
  • Marry legally at home. A symbolic ceremony in Iceland saves the paperwork and apostilles, and gives you complete freedom over time and place.
  • Plan the permits early. Applying late in Vatnajökull costs an extra ISK 41,600.

Questions about the cost of eloping in Iceland

Do we need a permit to elope in a national park in Iceland?
Often yes. Vatnajökull National Park treats a wedding as an event that needs a permit (ISK 62,400 in 2026), and commercial filming and photography need their own permit (ISK 83,200). Other protected areas use the same fees; at Þingvellir a single photographer carrying their own equipment needs no filming permit.
How much is a helicopter elopement in Iceland?
Scheduled helicopter tours start at ISK 46,900 per person for a short flight, and glacier landings at around ISK 137,500 per person. A private charter for a wedding with a landing is priced on request by the helicopter company.
What is the cheapest way to elope in Iceland?
A symbolic ceremony with a legal marriage at home, a celebrant, one region instead of a road trip across the country, and a date outside the summer peak. The official fees for a legal marriage are small – most of the budget is the team, the car and where you stay.
How much do you charge to film an elopement in Iceland?
Every elopement is different, so I do not publish fixed packages. Send me your date and plans and I will put together a proposal for your day.
